The eight semi-finalists of the XII Lionel Tertis International Viola Festival and Competition were announced last night (16th March) at the Erin Arts Centre following a recital by renowned violist and festival president Yuri Bashmet.
The violist chosen as semi-finalists are: Hae-Sue Lee, 16, South Korea; Lisa Sung, 20, Australia; Ming-Yu Hsu, 16, Taiwan; So Hui Yun, 19, South Korea; Steve Doman, 27, British; Timothy Ridout, 19, British; Manuel Vioque-Judde, 24, French and Wenhong Luo, 23, China.
The first stage of the competition saw festival director Dr John Bethell and a selected panel judging 96 DVD applicants. Of those 96 applicants, 44 were selected to perform at the Erin Arts Centre in the second and third stages of the competition.
The 44 competitors have been battling it out over the past five days in front of the five strong festival jury chaired by international oboe player Prof George Caird. From these players the eight semi-finalists were chosen.
The semi-finals of the competition will both take place this Friday from which three competitors will be chosen to perform in the competition final for 1st place.
The series of celebrity recitals also being performed as part of the festival will conclude tonight with a concert by acclaimed violist Thomas Riebl accompanied by Sophia Rahman on the piano.
