Gemma Hjerth author and publisher of ‘M is for Manx Cat! An Isle of Man ABC’, has published a second book: ‘The Isle of Man ABC Colouring and Activity Book’.

M is for Manx Cat! An Isle of Man ABC (the picture book) was written by Gemma Hjerth (nee Webb) and illustrated by Kim Gee. It was published in April 2019 by Gemma trading as Isle of Man ABC and received financial support from Isle of Man Arts Council and Year of Our Island.

Gemma subsequently created a range of Isle of Man ABC gifts, and in October, Theatrefest 2019 brought us ‘M is for Manx Cat – The Musical’ by Stage Door Entertainment – which is also going to be on tour around the Isle of Man in early 2020!!

The Isle of Man ABC Colouring and Activity Book has also now been published.

The colouring/actitivy book reuses the digital imagery from the popular picture book - with the addition of extra details to colour in and activities to do - and aims to educate, enhance creativity and encourage exploration of our Island. It also received financial support from Isle of Man Arts Council.

Gemma Hjerth (nee Webb), of Isle of Man ABC, said:

My Isle of Man ABC books and gift range wouldn’t exist without the financial support I received from Isle of Man Arts Council, the talent of local artist Kim Gee, and the Manx Gaelic from Culture Vannin, so first and foremost I must say thank you to them.

After ‘M is for Manx Cat!’ was received so well in April, I decided to press on and aim to get a colouring and activity book in local bookshops and gift shops in time for Christmas this year.

I love the Isle of Man and I loved the process of publishing my picture book too; and I wanted to empower young children, including my own, to feel a similar sense of pride, joy and personal achievement.

So, I’ve published the ‘Isle of Man ABC Colouring and Activity Book’ to enable children (and bigger kids too!) to create their own personalised keepsake of the Isle of Man. They can even cut out and create their own miniature ABC book too!

I hope locals, visitors and recipients around the world will have fun discovering the treasures of the Isle of Man, getting creative and practising some Manx Gaelic too!

Kim Gee, of Kim Gee Studio, said

It's so exciting to see our Isle of Man ABC take on another life as a colouring and activity book, allowing readers to personalise my illustrations and really make them their own.

I can't wait to see how people of all ages add in their own special touches and connect with this project in a new way.

Isle of Man Arts Council said:

The Isle of Man Arts Council are proud to support the Isle of Man ABC project as it is a wonderful celebration of our contemporary and traditional culture.

We particularly loved the collaboration between local creatives to bring about this new cololuring/activity book and we are thrilled to see how well received Gemma and Kim’s books have been on the Island and further afield.
